My rating: 5 of 5 stars
A paranormal teen read that you can't put down and will read in one sitting like I did. The story draws you in and is grounded in the reality of a gift with a price. Kate has a serious case of asthma, one that has hospitalized her, has her taking puffs from her inhaler constantly, and has her mother called if she has an attack at school. The other thing Kate has she's afraid to share with anyone, for fear they'll think she's crazy.
Kate sees visions of the past or the future when she has a bad attack. As she's coughing and hacking, scenes play out in her head and she notices details that are frightening, and way too close to home. When her visions involve her sister, and the sister of a boy she likes, Kate struggles with what she should do.
She wants to be a hero, she wants to help others, but she's so frail from her asthma, who'd believe her anyway?
I was impressed by how tense I felt, my own asthma felt like it was triggered by the tension on almost every page. I coughed all the way through the book in one sitting. I couldn't stop myself. There were so many twists and turns, my stomach felt like a field of oragami butterflies. (You'll have to read it to understand that comment in context.)
Cheryl Rainfield is a brilliant writer, one who cares very deeply about others, and it can be tangibly felt through her characters. I highly recommend this gripping tale of suspense and surprise. You'll find yourself holding your breath, hoping Kate will be able to breathe again, and I must say, the ending is breathtaking!
A must read.
